Otino Corsano assembles a collection of new painting and photo-based works on Plexiglas in his first solo exhibition at Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, entitled “Ones”.
In a frugal effort to locate a new look for conceptual painting, Corsano’s one-off experiments link unexpectedly. A unifying narrative begins with references to West Coast standards inspired by the works of Lee Mullican, Ed Ruscha and John Baldessari. The storyline continues with crossword puzzles, advertising text and documented gallery views towards a set of kitsch, yet sincere “Brain Flower” paintings.
Attempting to create singularly original works, Corsano arrives at loose pairs of anti-stylistic paintings appearing familiar but unplaced. Still, the paintings are designed as singular moments reflecting on the plurality of what today constitutes a conceptualist painting.
